Tasting Notes
05/29/2001
So this week-end I started small wine tasting in the shop. We
are very small, so I just opened a white and a red gave them
out free. I have been meaning to do this for a couple of years
now, a recent remodel gave us a few more square feet so we
tried it. It was quite a hit, and fun too. I will do tasting every
week end and tell you about them here!
I opened a Domaine de la Gautiere Red Provence Wine, I call it
red peasant wine, and some Fitzpatrick Eire Ban 1998
Sauvignon Blanc. Both wines went over pretty well, The Gautiere Rouge sold to
about 65% of people who tried it. Some of the comments were
"Soft Tannins...good!" "A mouthful ...I'll take a bottle!" "I hate
red wine ... can I try the white?" The Fitzpatrick Sauvignon Blanc sold to about 70% of tasters ( we had a wine festival in town for memorial day, I do not
expect it to sell as well all the time!) Once the day warmed up this wine went fast! Most of the comments were just "YUM! ...More!"
I will be away next week-end but the following week I will tell you about the tasting. I will tell you exactly what happens, if a wine does not do well I will say so!

Yesterdays wine was Cameo Vineyards White Zinfandel, I am mostly a red wine drinker, so I depend on the kindness of strangers to help me on these wines. I of course try them, but do not consider my opinion worth much! So saying, my taste told me this white Zin was on the off dry side of sweet, if that makes sense. The fruit flavor hits second and is subtle yet lasting in your mouth.
A couple from Nevada were the first to taste the wine, they were "sweeter wine" drinkers, loved it bought a bottle and took the website address to check back.
I had all good response from the tasters, I even convinced some hard core dry wine folks to taste it. They said "nicely done, not sickeningly sweet!", then bought a bottle of Picheral Merlot and left!
Remember I can't even spell Gew¸rztraminer!

O.K. We tasted the 1999 Chateau Pech- Latt Corbieres this past week-end and a repeat of the Cameo Vineyards Whiite Zinfandel (I had a lot of it).
The Chateau Pech- Latt tasted well, about 50% of the patrons bought at least one bottle. It is a blend of 40% Carignan, 30% Grenanache Noir, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Syrah. Now I will tell you up front I am not a fair judge as I love this wine for all the wrong reasons! Saying that, I think it is well discribed as spice first, fruit second, and a slow lingering finish. Some of the stranger comments were "Merlotish", "good at first, fine at last". Now I did have one lady who was with others who loved it say "I don't see what the big deal is, it tastes like wine". So I was happy that most other people also liked this wine!
Now, the Cameo Vineyards White Zinfandel. again, it just flat SELLS! I sold out Saturday.
Will have more in two days three on the outside.
I need to have a wine that does not taste as well soon, or you will not believe me!
Rember I only drink what is put before me.

So summer is really busy in the shop, it takes me a while to get here! This wine tasting idea REALLY is taking off. I feel like a waiter most days, "I got misery in the back ache and my feet hurt when I walk". It is fun though, I have five people lined up all tasting the same wine, and it tastes different to each one. Cantina Pizzolato's Pinot Grigio was this week-ends white wine. It sold out by the end of the first day, as it was warm and it is an easy to drink simple wine. Sit on the patio, no shoes, sip slowly until sundown, then switch to a red!

Well, it has been a long time since I have had a chance to give my twisted tales of wines I have known. This is a small operation, (mainly me) and this internet thing works! I think one of the best organic wines made in this country is Bonterra Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon. Barrel aged in oak, really tastes like "distinctive berry-plum flavors in this elegant, well-balanced Cabernet". A lot of wine labels are using the power of suggestion, this one is descriptive. I have done many tastings with this staple of California organics, it never fails to sell well.
So, all you need to do is buy some!

Well, The tourist season is over for the year. Maybe I can get back to writing a bit about the wine. Even limited sucsess has it's costs! I am not a loser, I try. I am a failure.
The Badger Mountain NSA 2000 Merlot has caught my attention for the last two weeks. It is from Washington and is a nice smooth, pure NSA wine. REAL esay to drink. "The next thing I knew it was Wednesday!"

Valentines Day!
Have A good Day! A better night. Drink your favorite wine with your favorite person. I am working to expand our selection in the next few weeks! I will write the reaction to the new wines as they are sampled. I might even let the customers try a little.

Well, finally the time to report on a wine I really liked. Noemus Rioja from Spain is a fine example of the organic wine to be had around the globe at this point. I shared it with my friend, and wine guy Mark Sturges, who is also the "fertilizer king". We think it is a winner!
